Vacant Property Count

The Vacant Property Count was a project initiated and enacted by Picture The Homeless, a homeless led housing organization that Not An Alternative is very close to. We played a supporting role with this project, offering our space as a hub to organize from and by encouraging our community to participate.

The intent of The Count was to show Bloomberg that it could be done, and to highlight the contradiction between the city’s promises and its practice. Picture The Homeless’s final report revealed that vacant buildings and lots in Manhattan alone could house all the homeless people living in shelters citywide.
