Real estate today is a speculative industry that deals in a currency of representation and symbol. An immaterial map has been overlaid atop the material landscape covering the entire world. Everything is a factor that determines value. In this environment subtle alterations of the symbolic geography radically affect the real material landscape.
Today we are witnessing a proliferation of groups who have been and continue to destabilize the popular understanding of the real estate industry by performing actions that use the symbols and processes associated with its authority. The increasing numbers of interventions are making it difficult to tell who is responsible for what. High-visibility orange has been virtually stolen as a symbol used to delineate work performed by hired contractors and has been transformed to a kind of flag representing what can only be called a movement.
This new class of real estate agents, in collaboration with communities, are finding it possible to come together under a banner that gives expression to their unified collective invisibility and in doing so put forth a vision of a new emergent real estate industry.
