After the Occupy Wall Street encampment was evicted, Mili-tents functioned as a material visualization of the movement’s displacement, and they served to propel the symbol of the tent—a primary signifier of the Occupy movement. Mili-tents were configured to be used in different ways. The tents were mounted to poles so they could be seen above the crowd, emblazoned with messaging. Lanterns were affixed inside the tents so they would glow during night-time marches. A sticky foot attachment made it possible to glue Mili-tents high up on the side of symbolically significant buildings, such as banks.
Several years later, they re-appeared in the context of the People’s Climate March. Carried by members of the Right to the City alliance and emblazoned with the phrases Rising Tides, Rising Rents, and Rising People, they illuminated the connection between climate change, gentrification, and displacement–and made visible an increasingly diverse climate justice movement.
