This was the second intervention on urban space that Not An Alternative produced with the homeless-led community group Picture the Homeless. In this collaboration it was our responsibility to figure out a way of getting into a vacant fenced-off bank-owned lot, in order to set up a tent city occupation. The solution we came up with was to costume as a film production crew shooting a music video called “A Place to Call Home”, as our cover story while we installed the tent city. But it wasn’t just a cover story–we also produced an actual music video that served as documentation of the day.
In addition to designing the intervention, we designed and fabricated the tent city, which became the site of a homeless encampment with a mobile kitchen and “casita” performance stage. (See Part 2)
