Occupy Sandy Way-Finding Signs
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy thousands still remain in need of mutual aid offered by Occupy Sandy. In the absence of proper city or state support this crisis-wayfinding project installs temporary signs to help all residents know about relief centers.
Not An Alternative and friends from Occupy Town Square and the Pratt Disaster Resilience Network have designed, produced and installed way-finding signage to help hurricane victims find relief. We need your help to get more signs up where they’re most needed. We’ve launched a website to crowdsource feedback for where people would like to see signs installed, and to track where signs already exist in order to maintain them. Are you on the ground in the Rockaways, Coney Island, Breezy Point, Brighton Beach, Staten Island, Red Hook, or other affected areas? Submit a report!
Why this project exists:
“What we need to do is let people know that hey, 10 blocks away there’s hot food, blankets, flashlights, water and medical services”
– Occupy Sandy coordinator
“A huge problem that is not being addressed at all is that information about where to get help is not reaching the residents. So many people don’t even know about relief centers that are just a few blocks away from them, and are traveling great distances on foot to reach help. Or worse, not going out because it is too far to travel on foot. Some are not even aware that there are buses running. Without television, internet, and cell service, the information is just not reaching the people in dire need. The mayor’s office is posting information for residents on their website and on twitter–I guess they didn’t get the memo that there’s still no power.”
– Local volunteer in the Rockaways
